The beaches are without a doubt the number one attraction, and many visitors choose Punta Cana simply to relax and do nothing more than bask in the sun and enjoy the crystal clear, calm waters. The majority of the resorts are all-inclusive and located beachfront, so those in search of uncompromised relaxation can spend time on the beach and by the pools without having to leave the resort.
Although the breathtaking beaches are most certainly a big part of Punta Cana’s appeal, there are many other ways to spend some time while visiting the island that will afford visitors the opportunity to experience the island’s culture and see more than simply the resort itself.
Wildlife and National Parks in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is home to eleven national parks, each offering diverse natural scenery and an abundance of wildlife, and although some parks do not allow visitors to tour independently, there are excellent guided tours available that provide a safe and convenient way to see some of the more remote areas of the country. Armando Bermudez National Park was established in 1956, and was the first national park in the Dominican Republic. It is still considered the most popular due to the 10,128 foot tall Pico Duarte. Located within the northern Cordillera Centraland, the 306 square mile park shares Pico Duarte with Jose del Carmen Ramirez National Park. Cooler than other areas of the country, the average temperature ranges from 54 F to 70 F. Climbing Pico Duarte is an objective for many who make the pilgrimage and requires a multi-day trek with camping along the trails, where wild boar, solenodonte and hutia may be spotted drinking from the cool streams of the twelve rivers that flow through the park. The main park office is in the town of Sabaneta, about 25km from San Juan de la Maguana.
In addition to the extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities within the country’s national parks, the Dominican Republic is also well known for its 300 plus species of brightly colored birds that can be found both inside the parks and in various other areas. The southwestern region is very popular with bird watchers because it combines a semi-desert zone with coast, lagoons, islands, lakes and cliffs, providing a diverse habitat for a large variety of birds.
Whale Watching is also a popular attraction between January and April each year, when thousands of humpback whales migrate to the Samana Bay region, close to Punta Cana. Boat tour operators offer excursions deep into the bay so that visitors can witness these majestic creatures in all their glory.
Jeep and Monster Truck Safari in Dominican Republic
For visitors who are looking for some adventure on their Dominican Republic vacation, there are endless opportunities for outdoor sports and activities, including horseback riding, hiking, kayaking, white water rafting, and kite-boarding. One exciting experience for the whole family that provides big thrills and a fantastic glimpse into local culture is a jeep or monster truck safari. The jeep safari puts you in the driver’s seat of your own four by four jeep, and allows you to explore local villages, rubber plantations, waterfalls and jungles. Discover secluded beaches and learn about local customs as you navigate through lush vegetation and scenery that will take your breath away. The monster truck safari is slightly different in that the eight wheel drive jeep is driven by a professional tour guide, who can hold up to 30 people on this full day adventure tour. Participants are seated high up to ensure an exceptional view of the countryside, and regular stops are made throughout the day to experience true Dominican living. The monster truck safari covers a variety of terrain, and the bumps are all part of the fun! Pass through lemon, coffee and cacao plantations with a stop at a waterfall for a cool dip in the swimming hole.
Golf in Punta Cana
For something a little more low key, golf is another popular activity in Punta Cana. No other place in the Caribbean features the caliber of internationally recognized golf course architects, with Nick Faldo, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Robert Trent Jones, to name but a few. With around 15 courses to choose from in the Punta Cana area alone, there is a game for everyone.
Teeth of the Dog is consistently ranked by golf experts as one of the top 50 courses in the world, and is located at Casa de Campo resort in nearby La Romana. The course features several signature Dye formations along with seven oceanfront holes, four on the front nine and three on the back, and is considered extra challenging due to the tricky sea breezes. The course opened in 1971 and recently underwent renovations and re-opened in November of 2005. Golf lessons are offered on property by golf pro Pierre Gagnon.
The Bavaro Golf Coursewas designed by designed by Juan Manuel Gordillo, and is located at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort, surrounded by lush vegetation. This par 72 18 hole course is situated alongside the Bavaro lagoon and is considered excellent for beginners, with each hole having three tees, classified for amateurs, ladies, and professionals.
Golfers, outdoor enthusiasts, culture junkies and those just looking for an idyllic tropical retreat will find that this Caribbean paradise has something for everyone, including families, couples, and singles, of all ages. Easily accessible and affordable, and with unlimited attractions and activities to indulge all tastes, Punta Cana is a great vacation choice, and many visitors find themselves returning year after year to enjoy everything that it has to offer.
